Home Health and Home Care services can facilitate aging in place for those patients who wish to remain in their private residence. These services can also be provided in Independent Living Communities.
Home Health is the provision of medical services such as nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, etc. Home Care is the provision of assistance with Activities of Daily Living such as dressing, eating, using the restroom, etc.
Medicare will generally pay for Home Health services but not Home Care services (although Medicare Advantage plans will cover select Home Care services starting in 2019). Medicaid coverage may be available for expenses not covered by Medicare. Additionally, there may be coverage with long-term care insurance, and in some situations with private health insurance. Veterans Administration benefits may also cover both Home Health and Home Care services.
